24. Bending Crooked Piano Hammers

This is an exciting one. It will especially appeal to you who are pyromaniacs. Why bend a hammer? There are two ways a hammer will warp. First, the shank will turn or twist with age, and it will move laterally into the hammer next to it.

See the diagram in Chapter Six; H. Straighten a crooked hammer. The first diagram in that section shows you what can happen.

The other way a hammer shank warps is to get a bow in it. The other diagram under the above mentioned topic shows the result. Either way, hammers rub and hang up on each other spoiling the playing of the piano. Damp weather may accentuate the problem.
