Subject: Politics Over Duty

This is a post from Bill Weiler, freelance journalist, over in Merritt Is, FL, who has been researching what went on before the storm hit. These are the authors comment - I find them very interesting.

Politics over Duty:

I think all of Mayor Nagin's pomp and posturing is going to bite him hard in the near future as the lies and distortions of his interviews are coming to light.

On Friday night before the storm hit Max Mayfield of the National Hurricane Center took the unprecedented action of calling Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco personally to plead with them to begin MANDATORY evacuation of New Orleans and they said they'd take it under consideration. This was after the NOAA buoy 240 miles south had recorded 68' waves before it was destroyed.

President Bush spent Friday afternoon and evening in meetings with his advisors and administrators drafting all of the paperwork required for a state to request federal assistance (and not be in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act or having to enact the Insurgency Act). Just before midnight Friday evening the President called Governor Blanco and pleaded with her to sign the request papers so the federal government and the military could legally begin mobilization and callup. He was told that they didn't think it necessary for the federal government to be involved yet. After the President's final call to the governor she held meetings with her staff to discuss the political ramifications of bringing federal forces. It was decided that if they allowed federal assistance it would make it look as if they had failed so it was agreed upon that the feds would not be invited in.

Saturday before the storm hit the President again called Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin requesting they please sign the papers requesting federal assistance, that they declare the state an emergency area, and begin mandatory evacuation. After a personal plea from the President, Nagin agreed to order an evacuation, but it would not be a full mandatory evacuation, and the governor still refused to sign the papers requesting and authorizing federal action. In frustration the President declared the area a national disaster area before the state of Louisiana did so he could legally begin some advanced preparations. Rumor has it that the President's legal advisers were looking into the ramifications of using the insurgency act to bypass the Constitutional requirement that a state request federal aid before the federal government can move into state with troops - but that had not been done since 1906 and the Constitutionality of it was called into question to use before the disaster.

Throw in that over half the federal aid of the past decade to NO for levee construction, maintenance, and repair was diverted to fund a marina and support the gambling ships. Toss in the investigation that will look into why the emergency preparedness plan submitted to the federal government for funding and published on the city's website was never implemented and in fact may have been bogus for the purpose of gaining additional federal funding as we now learn that the organizations identified in the plan were never contacted or coordinating into any planning - though the document implies that they were.

The suffering people of NO need to be asking some hard questions as do we all, but they better start with why Blanco refused to even sign the multi-state mutual aid pack activation documents until Wednesday which further delayed the legal deployment of National Guard from adjoining states. Or maybe ask why Nagin keeps harping that the President should have commandeered 500 Greyhound busses to help him when according to his own emergency plan and documents he claimed to have over 500 busses at his disposal to use between the local school busses and the city transportation busses - but he never raised a finger to prepare them or activate them.

This is a sad time for all of us to see that a major city has been all but destroyed and thousands of people have died with hundreds of thousands more suffering, but it's certainly not a time for people to be pointing fingers and trying to find a bigger dog to blame for local corruption and incompetence.

Pray to God for the survivors that they can start their lives anew as fast as possible and we learn from all the mistakes to avoid them in the future.

Subject: Katrina Relief - Who is responsible

In case you aren't familiar with how our government is SUPPOSED to work: The chain of responsiblity for the protection of the citizens in New Orleans is:

1. The Mayor
2. The New Orleans director of Homeland Security
(a political appointee of the Governor who reports to the Governor)
3. The Governor
4. The Head of Homeland Security
5. The President

What did each do?

1. The mayor, with 5 days advance, waited until 2 days before he announced a mandatory evacuation (at the behest of the President). Then he failed to provide transportation for those without transport even though he had hundreds of buses at his disposal.

2. The New Orleans director of Homeland Security failed to have any plan for a contingency that has been talked about for 50 years. Then he blames the Feds for not doing what he should have done.

3. The Governor, despite a declaration of disaster by the President 2 DAYS BEFORE the storm hit, failed to take advantage of the offer of Federal troops and aid. Until 2 DAYS AFTER the storm hit.

4. The Director of Homeland Security positioned assets in the area to be ready when the Governor called for them

5. The President urged a mandatory evacuation, and even declared a disaster State of Emergency, freeing up millions of dollars of federal assistance, should the Governor decide to use it.

Oh and by the way, the levees that broke were the responsibility of the local landowners and the local levee board to maintain, NOT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

The disaster in New Orleans is what you get after decades of corrupt government going all the way back to Huey Long.

Let it also be known that hundreds of school buses sat in their parking lots and were unused to carry those nasty dirty welfare beggars to safety. Heaven forbid that our nice clean buses be dirtied by welfare people. That was the mayor's call, and the creep is guilty of murder. The buses all now sit under water and will probably be written off as a loss. This was a rigged deal, worse than the 6% the casinos pay back. Dead Black folks and dead buses.

You Louisiana leaders, you can be proud. You did not bow to Federal aid and you did not take counsel from your God fearing President. Your queer friends must love you. Your abortion clinic owners will praise you. But, you have blood on your hands.

Please, dear reader, write your Senator and Congressman, and demand that the American people NOT be asked to rebuild New Orleans. Why should we put back together a city dedicated to whoredom, crack, and sodomy? Let the blasted pimps rebuild it.

Finally, here is how it works with corrupt government in the Deep South. The sheriff, the governor, many pols in local positions, the mayor, and the judges are very much on the take in bribes to look the other way regarding crack, pot, and meth labs. I fully believe that the decision discussed above had a lot more to do with the drug market collapsing if the consumers, welfare Blacks, were to leave the Big Easy and find that they could survive without her. So, the White trash scum decided to let the Blacks suffer through the crisis, and whoever was left would be there to keep the drug mercantile of Louisiana prospering. I fully believe they were counting on the levees to hold, and the crisis to be moderate.

In any case, the governing leaders of Louisiana HATE welfare people, and it may well be that they were content to sacrifice them by drowning. It may even be that they hoped they would drown in order to reduce the welfare load and free up funds for casino development and country club memberships. They got their wish. Praise God, the welfare people are now far away, and given a little time, they will not be likely to want to go back. I trust they find more mercy in Houston and Dubuque.

REGARDING SLAPPING THE KING

Here is an example of how people in trouble turn in rage on those who help them and those in authority. The king has traditionally been blamed for disaster since ancient times. This is why the kings of Europe, during the Black Plague, denied there was a plague. The people blamed the rulers for all the death.

This does not exonerate Bush from acting maturely, and I gather he has bungled it a bit as to rapid response. But, the fact is, a disaster like this is beyond human power to solve in a flash. Some people will still die. There ARE limitations, and tax money cannot fix everything. No one, be they ever so sincere, has been along this path before. This is historically a first.

Furthermore; maybe the Louisiana senator should discuss the idiocy of a city living out its life for possibly 200 years while not addressing the inevitable collision course it was on with nature. Bush did not build that city below sea level, and Bush did not tell those people it was OK to slap God's face and laugh at his holiness while building all those whore houses. So, the senator can slap Bush in the face. So what? Better to slap a whore, pimp, or pusher downtown for a change.

Here is an interesting response:

George Bush had nothing to do with the hurricane contingency plans for New Orleans. Those are drawn up by New Orleans and Louisiana. In any event, the plans were perfectly good: mandatory evacuation. It is in no way at all George Bush's fault that about 20 percent of New Orleans neglected to follow the plan.

It is not his fault that many persons in New Orleans were too confused to realize how dangerous the hurricane would be. They were certainly warned.

It's not George Bush's fault that there were sick people and old people and people without cars in New Orleans. His job description does not include making sure every adult in America has a car, is in good health, has good sense, and is mobile.

George Bush did not cause gangsters to shoot at rescue helicopters taking people from rooftops, did not make gang bangers rape young girls in the Superdome, did not make looters steal hundreds of weapons, in short, make New Orleans into a living hell.

George Bush is the least racist President in mind and soul there has ever been and this is shown in his appointments over and over. To say otherwise is scandalously untrue.

May I add that George Bush did not deal the drugs to all the diddle heads in New Orleans who were too high to leave town-- who later were crashing in withdrawal and thought the helicopters were "the VC" and fired at them. When you run crack up your nose, deal with it, maybe die with it, when an emergency calls on you to make a quick and rational decision. It is not George Bush's job to stand on the street corner and tell you when to wipe your nose or when to walk north.

One man said, "Wise behavior can secure economic well-being. Men and women who stick together, stay out of trouble, and work steadily, are rarely poor, and their children surmount poverty as well." They also have the resources to escape disaster. No one talks about the fact that welfare people, who lack cars to escape, are the ones who CHOOSE to loaf through life and live like pigs. There is a price to pay for sin, and throwing money at the rebels will not remove the consequences. Nor is Caesar responsible for their way of life that lead them to disaster.

God took them out, and that is not bad. There is a built in penalty for all law breaking. All of us need to look hard at God's sending Katrina to dance in the bars and brothels of New Orleans. Are we too playing fast and loose with God's holy law?

I have no lost love for George Bush, but I am sick of Liberal Democrat scum Senators blaming Bush for everything the Feds do slow or wrong. When a politician uses a disaster like this hurricane as a vehicle to exalt himself and drag down the king, you can be sure that he has no plan and no personal zeal to help. How many of these fat pigs like Ted Kennedy are in Louisiana helping?

We the people need to watch and learn. America has few if any of these extreme events, as do many other nations. It would be instructional to shut up, watch, and gather knowledge. One day, we may have our own tsunami, or a 9 point earthquake somewhere. Let Bush do his job. He is a bit slow, being a dry drunk, but he is not sitting in the White House sucking his thumb either. I have seen famine in Ethiopia, and I know that there are NEVER enough helpers and relief workers when monumental disaster strikes. Some people are not saved because the helpers have limitations. So do Presidents.

Dear Steve,

I just want to comment on the situation in Louisiana. I have heard teaching by some Bible teachers that God no longer judges nations and cities because we are now in the age of grace since Christ's death and resurrection. They should try telling that to the people of Israel who were dispersed or killed by the Romans in around 70 A.D. When I heard on the news which two majors cities were destroyed by this hurricane, I couldn't help but wonder if this was God's judgment.

New Orleans is not only known for Mardi Gras, this godless ritual of perverse sexuality and drunkenness, but it is also known for its roots in voodoo mixed with Catholicism. Biloxi is probably the major gambling mecca of the Southeast. Then, when I saw the widespread looting and heard about some refugees shooting at their rescuers, I knew that these people had spiritually descended to the level of Sodom and Gomorrha.

Many White people saw this as being a poor reflection on Black people in general. But they need to understand that the looting and shooting is the spiritual fruit of godless decadence. I was so angry at first about how these people were acting that I did not even want to pray for them. But the Lord spoke to my heart and reminded me that He makes it to rain on the just and on the unjust.

I pray that God will destroy their wicked desires, soften their hearts, and draw them to Christ. I pray that the conviction of the Holy Spirit will cause them to be so miserable that they will turn and repent. After all, many of these people are moving into areas close to where decent people live. They are being invited to come to Columbus, GA and Opelika, AL until they can return to their homes. Some of them will not be going back. These people are bringing their voodoo and sexual practices with them. Some may have never heard the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

I pray that God will send laborers (including me) to preach the Gospel to them. America is fast becoming a cesspool of sin and corruption, despite the Evangelical Christian agenda to clean up this nation through politics. But I believe that God is cleaning up this nation His way by saving those who would receive salvation and leaving those who reject salvation to their own devices.

BIG EASY-- WHY?
Was God mad at sin city?

I don't think God was out to lunch. He caused Katrina to do the light fantastic and jog around New Orleans. I think it was up to man to do the rest. The city fathers, for years, seem to have been pocketing the cash for improving the levees. Their cavalier attitude toward sin and sodomy was reduced to a thing as simple as building a levee with a pile of dirt.

Cheryl Bertram's thanks to FEMA for being rescued turned quickly to scorn for New Orleans officials over the broken levees that led to the rising water in her City Park neighborhood. "It wasn't God, it was man" that caused the catastrophe, Bertram said. "Where'd all the money go that was supposed to pay for the levees? I lived through Hurricane Betsy in 1965, and I can tell you right now, the city was so much better organized then."

But here is a haunting opinion that stands on higher ground than Cheryl Bertram's assessment:
Stephen Carter was rescued with his two children. He said he wavered about evacuating last weekend after being stuck in eastbound traffic with less than a half-tank of gas. "We nailed a big 'Help' sign on our roof," he said. The family had to climb to the third floor of a neighbor's house because it was taller until "we heard the boat come." Carter said his faith in God guided the family through their ordeal. "This (hurricane and flood) is the hand of a holy God,"

"Oh my God, it was hell," said Kioka Williams, who had to hack through the ceiling of the beauty shop where she worked as floodwaters rose in New Orleans' low-lying Ninth Ward.

Hell has its moral filth also. So, could God single out this city for destruction just before some gross symbolic event. It seems to be so. Lady Katrina came to town just a few days before Southern Decadence, a vile public annual debauch of sodomy from around the USA. Each year it has grown bigger and bigger, and while civic leaders drop their political drawers, decent parents have to take their kids and flee from the city so they will not see the open sexual displays.

I believe New Orleans is a dead city. READ THIS. The people who lived here will do some hard thinking before they move back to live below sea level again. Maybe, in the end, God has made this city a habitation of dragons, as in water moccasins and mosquitos. The people who are left are non-producers, and they looted what was left of the business merchandise. Who wants to go back to pay the tax bill of indigent loafers AND the cost of rebuilding a city?

Alex Romansky, a Gulf Coast resident for 30 years, said he was unlikely to stay. "Do we rebuild, do we buy, do we just move the hell out of here?" he wondered. "My inclination, after seeing this kind of storm damage, is that we don't want to live here anymore."

Was God answering prayer during that storm? Answer: Yes:

Alone in her one bedroom house in Slidell, La., in her wheelchair, Fluffy Sparks did the only thing she could think of when Hurricane Katrina's flood waters rushed into her home: she prayed.

"I prayed like I've never prayed in all my life," said the 46-year-old woman, who watched in terror as the waters rose to under her chin as she sat in her wheelchair. "I told God, 'I can't believe you're ready for me now. Don't let me die in this water here by myself.'"

Somehow, Sparks managed to haul herself up onto her small, wooden-legged kitchen table. Miraculously, the water stopped rising just as it reached the table's top. "I'm breathing," she said, sweating in a mud-stained gown and watching a parade of people wading and passing in small fishing boats down Fremaux Street, which was still covered by thigh-deep, but receding waters. "It was horrible, and it's still horrible, but I'm breathing."

AP / USA Today's Video coverage speaks for itself. America is a great nation, but the forces of Almighty God can humble the most mighty people in minutes. I have to wonder if God is handing us a bill to pay that will finally convince George Bush, or at least the Senate, that Baghdad is just not that important anymore. If the Feds don't get serious about this storm, fuel prices and building supplies WILL. One more such disaster like this could start run away recession worse than during Jimmy Carter days. Prophecy teachers have wondered how God would reduce America before the End Times, for the center of biblical events does not end in Kansas, it all ends centered on Europe, Asia, and Jerusalem.

One of these days the bill for slapping God's face will be too high to pay, and the USA will die. Mark it down. What would happen if America would repent.....................?

New Orleans worshipped the god of the groin. Jehovah seems to have had the last word, folks, and he can do it again.

The USA has run all over the world thousands of times to help out when people were in trouble. The latest was the tsunami in Asia. Americans are still there helping people start over. How many nations of the world do you think will send one ruble, guilder, mark, pound, or piaster to New Orleans? None? You got it bunky. America, if she rights herself, always has to do it herself. The ungrateful wretches of the rest of the world know just what is wrong with America, and they thrash us in millions of editorials and into the General Assembly of the UN. But, if we were all dying of starvation, the UK, EU, Middle East, Israel, and ALL of those we have helped, would pass by on the other side and wag their heads.

Why is it so? With all of our wickedness and godless ways in the USA these days, there is no comparison between the spiritual condition of America and the rest of the world. France and China state in their constitution that they are Atheists. France is a filthy dirty nation, spiritually, yes, but also they don't like to bathe. The Middle East has a killer religion, and they cannot stop their lust for blood letting. The Salt of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the USA makes Muslims look like beasts. Thus, they call us Satan, and they issue Islamic edicts to kill American Christians.

Israel hates Jesus Christ just as much as on the day he was crucified, but they sublimate their hate for us in view of the billions of foreign aid and the tourist cash flow from Bible believers. India has no ethics, PERIOD. Hinduism is amoral, and the average Hindu can stand and watch a beggar die of starvation right in front of him and not care a fig. Meanwhile, nearby will be an orphanage run by American Christians.

Africa has lost all of its Christian heritage the American missionaries brought it. Africa is totally corrupted in all government venues, AND in all African churches of EVERY kind. Money is embezzled, and foreign aid is never enough. Africa is a beggar world, and African members of the UN are forever blaming the USA for not helping them more. They despise the God of America because his Word accuses them of being beasts.

So, the filthy world sees the USA with its salt of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and they hate us. We are an ongoing accusation against their debauched condition. When Nixon was deposed for lying, the world's leaders absolutely did not understand why. When Bill Clinton was called to task for his sexual perversions, the world felt sorry for him.

The higher ground is dangerous folks. Every scoundrel in the hedge row will keep one arrow on the bow string ready as we walk down the path. We must forever thrash them before they get us.

The world wishes we would be destroyed, and I fully believe that most national leaders worldwide would push the button to nuke America if they could get away with it.

In Tennessee, we say "Deal with it."

We have a mess here in many ways, but our mess is sure a lot more interesting than the garbage dump of the rest of the world. And, you Bible believers, keep thrashing the wicked with the Word of God. If they repent, they are converted and become a moral asset and part of the solution. If they reject Christ, keep the heat to their feet so the wicked do not rule.

BEWARE OF URBAN LEGEND EMAIL TITLED
"A VOLUNTEER DOCTOR TELLS HIS STORY"

This is another example of a person forwarding an email that he did not write but it has been circulated as though he wrote it. Dr. Richard Johnson says he is not the author of this email and that he has not been in Texas for more than 10 years. He does recall seeing the message and forwarding it but that's it. Subsequent versions of the eRumor have been sent around the world with his name and contact information at the bottom of the email making it appear as though he originated it. We don't know who wrote it.

Snopes also rates this an "undetermined."

An M.D. Reports What the Network News Does Not Show...

I thought I might inform the few friends I have on my recent traumatic experience. I am going to tell it straight, blunt, raw, and I don't give a damn. Long read, I know; but please do read!

I went to volunteer on Saturday at the George R. Brown (Houston ) convention for two reasons.

A: I wanted to help people to get a warm fuzzy feeling.
B: Curiosity.

I've been watching the news lately and have seen scenes that have made me want to vomit. And no, it wasn't dead bodies, the city under water, or the sludge everywhere. It was PEOPLE"S BEHAVIOR. The people on T.V. (99% being Black) were DEMANDING help. They were not asking nicely; but demanding, as if society owed these people something. Well, the honest truth is WE DON'T.

Help should be asked for in a kind manner and then appreciated. This is not what the press (FOX in particular) was showing, what I was seeing was a group of people who are yelling, demanding, looting, killing, raping, and SHOOTING back at the demanded help! So I'm thinking this can't possibly be true... can it? So I decided to submit to the DEMAND for help out of SHOCK. I couldn't believe this to be true of the majority of the people who are the weakest of society. So I went to volunteer and help folks out and see the truth. So I will tell the following story and you decide:

I arrived at the Houston Astrodome only to find out that there are too many volunteers, and that volunteers were needed at the George R. Brown Convention Center I toured the place to get familiar with my surrounding; the entire place is probably around 2 million sq. ft. I noticed rows as far as the eye can see of mattresses, not cots, BLOW UP MATTRESSES! All of which had nice pillows and plenty of blankets. 2 to 3 bottles of water lay on every bed. These full-size to queen size beds, by the way, were comfortable. I laid on one to see for myself.

I went to look at the medical area. I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing! A makeshift hospital created in 24 hours! It was unbelievable, they even had a pharmacy. I also noticed that they created showers, which would also have hot water. I went upstairs to the third floor to find a HUGE cafeteria created in under 24 hours! Rows of tables, chairs and food everywhere - enough to feed an army!

I'm not talking about crap food either. They had Jason's deli food, apples, oranges, coke, diet coke, lemonade, orange juice, cookies, all types of chips and sandwiches. All the beverages by the way were put on ice and chilled! In a matter of about 24 hours or less an entire mini-city was erected by volunteers for the poor evacuees. This was not your rundown crap shelter, it was BUM HEAVEN.

So that was the layout: great food, comfy beds, clean showers, free medical help. By the way there was a library, and a theatre room I forgot to mention. Great stuff right?

Well here is what happened on my journey -

I started by handing out COLD water bottles to evacuees as they got off the bus. Many would take them and only 20% or less said thank you. Lots of them would shake their heads and ask for sodas! So this went on for about 20-30 minutes until I was sick of being an unappreciated servant. I figured certainly these folks would appreciate some food! So, I went upstairs to serve these beloved evacuees some GOOD food that I wish I could have at the moment!

The following statements are graphic, truthful, and disgusting, UNRATIONAL behavior! Evacuees came slowly to receive this mountain of food that is worth serving to a king! I tell them that we have two types of great deli sandwiches to choose from - ham and turkey. Many look at the food in disgust and DEMAND burgers, pizza, and even McDonalds! Jason's deli is better than McDonalds!

Only one out of ten people who took something would say "thank you" the rest took items as if it was their God given right to be served... without a shred of appreciation! They would ask for beer and liquor. They complained that we didn't have good enough food. They refused food and laughed at us. They treated us volunteers as if we where SLAVES.

No, not all of them of course, but 70% did! 20% where appreciative, 10% took the food without any comment and the other 70% had some disgusting comment to say. Some had the nerve to laugh at us. And when They would eat their food and leave their mess on the table. Some would pick up their stuff but most would leave it for the volunteers to pick up.

I left that area real quick, to go down and help set up some more beds. I saw many young ladies carrying mattresses and I helped for a while. Then I realized that there were hundreds of able bodied young men who could help! I asked a group of young evacuees in their teens and early twenties to help. I got cursed at for asking them to help! One said "We just lost our f________ homes and you want us to work!" The next said, "Ya Cracker, you got a home, we don't." I looked at them in disbelief. Here are women walking by carrying THEIR BEDS and they (young men) can't lift a finger and help themselves!

WHY SHOULD I HELP PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO HELP THEM SELVES!!!!

I waved them off and turned away and was laughed at, and more "white boy jokes" were made at me. I felt no need to waste my breath on a bunch of pitiful losers. I went to a nearby restroom where I noticed a man shaving. I used the restroom, washed my hands and saw this man throw his razor towards the trash can...he missed. He walked out leaving his disgusting razor on the floor for some other "cracker" to pick up. Even the little kids were demanding. I saw only ONE white family and only TWO Hispanic families. The rest where blacks: 20% to 30% decent blacks, and 70% LOSERS!!

I would call them N*****S, but the actual definition of a n*****r is one who is ignorant. These people were not ignorant, they were ARROGANT A____________. The majority of which are thugs and lifetime, lazy-ass, welfare recipients. We are inviting the lowest of the low to Houston. And like idiots, we are serving the people who will soon steal our cars, rape, murder, and destroy our city while stealing from our pockets on a daily basis through the welfare checks they take. We will fund our own destruction.

By "US" I don't mean a specific race, I mean the people who work hard, work smart, have values and morals. Only people who want to help themselves should be helped, the others should be allowed to destroy themselves. I do not want to work hard, give the government close to half the money I earn, so they can in turn give it to a bunch of losers. I don't believe in being poor for life. My family immigrated here. We came here poor, and now thank God, and due to HARD WORK, we are doing fine. If immigrants, who come here, don't know the language can work and become successful ... WHY CAN'T THE MAJORITY OF THE HOMEGROWN DO IT? If we continue to reward these losers then we will soon destroy our great country.

I just witnessed selfish, arrogant, unappreciative behavior by the very people who need help the most. Now these same people... who cursed me, refused my city's generosity, who refuse to help themselves are DEMANDING handouts on their own terms! They prance around as if they are owed something, and when they do receive a handout, they say it's not good enough!

Origins: Within a few days of evacuees from New Orleans arriving in Houston to be temporarily housed at the Astrodome and the George R. Brown Convention Center, we began receiving the 'So I volunteered . . .' account quoted as the first example above. Most versions were prefaced with the claim that it came "from a guy here in Houston that went to volunteer his time to help the hurricane victims." It presents the evacuees as lazy, arrogant, welfare rats with an inflated sense of entitlement, thereby calling into question the rightness of assisting
them.

That e-mailed report regarding the attitude and behavior of evacuees doesn't seem to jibe with the experience of Rick Barrett, a volunteer who served at the Astrodome. According to his account, he found people "were so grateful for people taking care of them and being there for them after what they'd been through" and "their eyes lit up when you just gave them a cold can of Coke." Additional reports from other volunteers at the Astrodome describe kindly, supportive, and touching interactions between volunteers and evacuees.

We've looked at other blog entries from volunteers working with the evacuees in Houston only to find that among the ones we located there is no mention of arrogance or a rampaging sense of entitlement among the evacuees, no description of trashed washrooms or food spurned because it wasn't what the displaced citizens from New Orleans wanted. While it is possible the author of the much-circulated account did encounter the behavior and attitudes he chronicled, one has to wonder why even outside the confines of mainstream media other mentions of similar ill-treatment of the volunteers and the facilities are so hard to come by.

Instead, stories abound of what it's like to be living in one of the many centers the uprooted have been taken to, such as Kristin Finan's account of spending the night as an evacuee and an Associated Press article about a day in the lives of Kiesha and Darren Keller, two of the many temporarily housed at the Astrodome. Those stories and others paint a very different picture of the evacuees.

The earliest manifestation of the "So I volunteered . . ." editorial we know of was a MySpace entry on 4 September 2005 written by a blogger named Maher, who describes himself as a 24-year-old living in North Houston who immigrated to the U.S. from Syria when he was five.

The piece has subsequently become associated with a doctor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Richard L. Johnston came to be presumed its author after forwarding the item to his circle of friends, who in turn forwarded it to others, leaving Johnston's signature block affixed. Dr. Johnston disavows his connection:
My name is Richard L. Johnston. I'm the physician who allegedly wrote the long email about my experience at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston where Katrina evacuees from New Orleans were housed.

I've never been to the George R. Brown Convention Center, and I have not been to Houston in more than 10 years. During the crisis of the last two weeks, I've been here in Jackson, Mississippi, taking care of evacuees from the Gulf Coast transferred to our VA Medical Center here where I'm the chief medical resident.

I did not write the email about the Brown Convention Center, but I did receive it and did forward it to several friends. The forwarded message included my signature block and that's why it was assumed that I wrote the email. However, in forwarding the message, I made a very bad error in judgment, and I deeply apologize for any hurt or discomfort I've caused others by doing so.

I've learned a hard and difficult lesson and I hope those of you who read this have also. Too much of what we all mindlessly forward through cyberspace can only be termed fictious, unsubstantiated trash. The appropriate receptacle is a garbage can.
Regarding the second item quoted in our Examples section above, numerous airlines began flying supplies and personnel into New Orleans and refugees out on 2 September. Some of the first planes ferried in law enforcement officers, federal air marshals, and Transportation Security Administration screeners.

The various airlines are engaging in this effort on their own. Jack Evans, a spokesman for the Air Transport Association, said FEMA agreed to reimburse the airlines for jet fuel used in the airlift, "but other than that, the airlines are doing this on a volunteer basis. The crews on board are all volunteers."

Once again, we've so far found nothing to substantiate the claims made in the e-mail that refugees being flown out of New Orleans (MSY is the airport code for the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport) to Texas (DFW is the code for the Dallas/Fort Worth airport; SAT the code for San Antonio) behaved in the manner described, neither that they trashed a hotel in San Antonio nor that they threw bottled water at cabin personnel.

Regarding the second e-mail's claim that there was water to be had by the evacuees in the airport before taking the flights they supposedly acted so badly on:

I work at MSY (New Orleans Intl) for the New Orleans Aviation Board. Regarding comment "There was water at the water fountains" is inaccurate. Yes, there was water, but it was not drinkable. I placed the "do not drink" signs there over every water fountain on American Airlines concourse myself.
Both e-mails tend to confirm a widely-held suspicion those evacuated from the wreckage of New Orleans are the dregs of society, content to live on handouts even as they verbally abuse those doing the handing out. Such characterization tends to fit more neatly into what people need to believe if they are to feel good about scaling back on the relief efforts underway — by convincing themselves recipients of their largesse are both unworthy and ungrateful, they will find it less painful to disassociate themselves than if the victims of Katrina remained in their minds sweet-faced little children, befuddled but lovable grandfathers, and struggling families who lost it all and now have nothing.

Regarding the Katrina evacuees, there are going to be abuses of the kindness of others because that is simply human nature: among any group, there will always be rotten apples, those who behave badly no matter where they are or under what circumstances. The question remains whether among this particular group if the rotten apples are the exception or comprise the majority.

Middle Eastern Muslims hate Black people. It just may be that someone from the Middle East started this as a hate gesture. Otherwise, it is also possible that some Blacks got out of line and were rude. Thus, the email is simply one man's revenge. Not a reliable measure of events or people from New Orleans.

In retrospect, I have come to believe that this is just another hate attack for which the web has become all too helpful.
